Is AEO Replacing SEO? Kinda. But Don’t Panic.

SEO changed how we write for the web, now AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is doing the same for the AI era.

With Google’s Gemini summaries showing up before links, and more people using ChatGPT and Perplexity for search, it’s no surprise everyone’s suddenly talking about AEO. It’s all about crafting content that directly answers questions in a conversational way — the kind AI loves to cite.

Think: full-sentence answers, clear explanations, and reliable sources. Less keyword stuffing, more “here’s what you asked, and here’s the answer.”

Marketers are catching on fast. Dozens of AEO-focused tools launched recently, VC money is flowing into the space, and ChatGPT is now even driving referral traffic thanks to clickable links and tools.

But before you rewrite your whole content strategy, breathe.

Neil Patel calls AEO a subset of SEO, not a replacement. So if you’re already creating valuable, relevant content that answers real questions, you’re ahead of the curve.

Just shift your focus slightly:

  • Be clear.

  • Be conversational.

  • Be helpful.

  • Be sourceable.

Because in the age of AI, the brands that get cited are the ones that get seen.
